Miyoshi Basin
Miyoshi Basin, the northern area of Hiroshima prefecture, is a nation-wide famous foggy area in Japan.  Miyoshi City tends to be shrouded in dense fog almost every morning during early autumn and early winter.  We can see great sea of fog if we visit one of mountains around the basin in the early morning.  In this gallery I exhibit photos of fog around Miyoshi Basin.

We need some luck to get nice photos of fog, because condition of fog differs day by day, weather condition differs as well, and condition of sunrise does, too.  Good photos will be taken only when these key three conditions come together great.

2001 autumn was the first season I tried to take fog's photograph, and almost every weekend during mid October to mid December I visited to Miyoshi by waking up at 3 o'clock in the morning.  The photos exhibited here are the results of my activity in the season.
Fog itself is white, but this mean it will be colored in that of surrounding light.  Light condition from early twilight to 30 minutes after sunrise is continuously and drastically changing.  Thus expression of fog is also changing drastically during the time.  I have taken many photos of fog and found...... "the key of fog photography is COLOR !"

2001 Autumn - Winter
Midnight Green
Like the day I took Moonlight Blue photos below, the half moon was in the sky, but it was clouded and moonlight was so weak. Then light of a city behind the hills appeared in green.  Moonlight is not reproduced in blue but neutral, maybe because the film was not Kodak E100VS but FUJI TREBI 100C.
Moonlight Blue
This day, the half moon stayed at the top of the sky before the daybreak.  So I took this photo only with moonlight, resulted in blue scenery on Kodak E100VS film.  Blue of moonlight, red blurred lights on the towers of power cables, and blurred fog with slow shutter at 30 seconds make this photo fantastic, I think.
Though twilight started a while after the above photo was taken, this photo looks similar to the above.  But red light on the tower and fog between the mountains are no longer blurred because of much faster shutter speed at 2.5 seconds. Yet fantastic.
Twilight Orange
It was still so dark that I could not see any scenery of the land, but long time exposure onto the film has reproduced the scenery in graceful colors.
Orange in Blue
It was not so fine and was occasional showers in that morning, but there was a break in the clouds in the east, and orange sunlight came through to the land.
It's another day's sunrise.  The sun appeared above the haze, make the scenery in two tone colors.

Morning Sepia
After sunrise, the slanting sunlight lit the fog up in sepia.  This is a photo what I have pursued to take so long.
It's another favorite photo in the morning sepia sunlight.  The slanting sunlight made the scene in more relief.

Sunrise Red
It was a moderate glow in the morning sky, and fog was seen dramatically.  This was a prologue of the act of fog and sunrise in the day.
As the sun was rising up, slanting sunlight made the fog more in relief, in great contrast of light and shadow.  At the same time fog started moving dynamically because it was warmed up by the sunlight.
This is a photo of the moment when I could see the most dynamic movement of the fog .
Morning White
Fog itself is white.  I believe pictures something like sumie, indian-ink drawings, have charm.  Photos shown above were taken at Mt. Okada, southern area of Miyoshi Basin in late autumn, but these two photos were taken in the western area of Miyoshi Basin in spring (March).  That morning was cloudy and no red sunrise was seen, then the fog stayed in white.
The fog was flowing ceaselessly and the two photos were taken at the good timing when the fog came in good shape and position.
